Kootenay Rockies
The small community of Newgate is situated off the beaten path on Lake Kookanusa, near the Canada-US Border in the Canadian Rockies. The area is dry and sunny and offers excellent water activities on the lake including swimming, canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding. Fishing for kokanee is popular with anglers. Walking or hiking on the many trails is available in nearby Kikomun Creek Provincial Park which is home to many endangered plants. Lake Kookanusa is 144 km long and is a reservoir created when a dam was built on the Kootenay River in Montana in the USA.
Located near the Canada-US Border at the terminus of the Wardner Newgate Rd. There is no crossing to the US from here. Traveling south on Hwy 3 Fernie is 81 km (50 mi) from Newgate or 102 km (64 mi) south east from Cranbrook. From Hwy 3 follow signs for Kikomun-Newgate Road.
