Places to See

  • Canyon Creek Campground

Situated in Hixon along Highway 97, Canyon Creek Campground is one of the most beautiful and best kept secrets in the central interior of British Columbia. Located in a lovely and unique creekside setting, it is total privacy within 35 minutes of Prince George to the north, and an equal distance to Quesnel in the south. There is a half mile of creekside walking, as well as cross-country ski and eco-nature trails nestled amongst magnificent evergreens and towering cottonwoods. There are several species of fish for fly and creek fishing (fishing season opens July 1), or try your hand at gold panning. Tranquil and serene are the various parkbench settings and picnic sites with tables. Moss covered tenting sites will ensure a soft sleep with Mother Nature, and roasting wieners and marshmallows over an open fire will ensure pleasant memories with loved ones.

  • Bowron Lake Provincial Park

World class Bowron Lake Provincial Park is a true jewel in the Quesnel area. People from all over the world come to canoe or kayak the 116-kilometre chain of lakes and rivers. The park boasts lofty mountain peaks, sensitive marshlands, and abundant wildlife. The scenery is incredible. For those who want a simple day on the beach or to experience great camping, the park has ample facilities to accommodate that need as well.

  • Huble Homestead

A fully-restored turn-of-the-century trading post on the banks of the Fraser River, just 40 kilometres north of Prince George off Highway 97. The Huble Homestead includes the original log home, a general store, farm animals, and other heritage buildings. Open daily 10am to 5pm from the May long weekend to the Labour Day weekend.

Things to Do

  • Fishing

The Cariboo region has thousands of lakes, ponds, and rivers that are great for fishing. Dragon Lake is a fly fisher's dream and features plenty of trophy-sized rainbow trout. The Quesnel River has Rainbow Trout, Bull Trout, and Spring Salmon- all of which can reach up to 30 lbs during the summer.

  • Cross-country Skiing

One of the best Nordic ski areas in Western Canada, Hallis Lake is also great for walking, hiking, and biking in the spring, summer, and fall. Nordic skiers can enjoy trails for all skill levels, loops of up to 32 kilometres, a 2.5 kilometre lighted track, a biathlon area, and a day lodge. Hallis Lake trails are maintained by the Cariboo Ski Touring Club, which charges a nominal winter day fee.

  • Hiking

Hiking opportunities abound in the Prince George area, from day excursions to backwoods backpacking to horseback tours to, believe it or not, Llama trekking. Great rock climbing, caving, and in the winter, ice-climbing can be had in every direction.

Package tours can also be arranged. Canoe down a portion of the mighty Fraser River and then spend the rest of the day hiking through wilderness trails. Or combine llama trekking or horseback riding with a day-long river trip via pontoon boat or river jetboat.

Events

  • Summerfest

Summerfest is a Prince George summer tradition! The event starts with a kids' parade in front of the Farmers' Market, kicking off a full day of good old family entertainment. Ethnic food, crafts, activities, and family attractions are spread throughout the day!

  • Billy Barker Days

The Billy Barker Days Festival is a four-day celebration of the Cariboo's historic gold rush and features over a hundred family events. Features a golf tournament, a carnival, free live entertainment, a huge fireworks display, a barn dance, and- of all things, a toddler triathlon! Takes place on the third weekend of July.
